Controversial speculations

As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer or to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.” 1 Timothy 3-5

Controversial Speculation. Yesterday, I had to decide whether I’d like to spend a large amount of money on a new serger. My old serger, which I have had for almost 40 years, is getting harder to find parts for. I have had it in the “shop” twice in the last two weeks. So, where do you go? I went to someone who is very reputable. I knew his words would be true, and I could trust that he didn’t give me any false information. How do I know the person is a person of his word? How do I know that he knows his “stuff?” First, I’ve been going to him for 40 years, my mom went to him, and mostly because he has always been fair and trustworthy. Sewing Save in Racine has always gotten my business because I have found them to be a place of truth. In today’s verses, Paul is urging Timothy to be a man of his word. Today, it is easy to get caught up in controversial speculations. Paul reminds us that the goal of Jesus’ command is love, “which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith.” Today, as we go about our lives, try not to get caught up in false teachings, myths, or other nonsense. Seek those who can give you truth. A truth that stems from wanting the best, from kindness, from generosity, and from a person or persons with pure hearts on the path…
