Rise

Rise. The Gospel of John has much symbolism. When I read this Gospel, I know I must really dig deep to find out what Jesus is telling me. In today’s reading, Jesus heals someone who hasn’t walked.  John 5:8 “Jesus said to him, 'Rise, take up your mat, and walk.” I ask myself in what ways do I need to “rise.” Have I been sitting around, stagnating, and not doing what I am supposed to? What does Jesus mean by taking up my ‘mat’? A mat is something personal that only one person can use at a time. Does he mean to pick up my uniqueness, myself? I remember as a Girl Scout making sit-upons that were made unique to the maker. As a disciple, I am called to reach out to others. So when Jesus says to walk, I am reminded that ministry isn’t about people coming to me, but me going to them. Today, when you hear the words, “Rise, take up your mat, and walk,” ask yourself what it means to you. I know it can mean many things when we are sick or tired and don’t want to push through. Whatever the meaning to you, listen for the healing of Jesus and “rise, take up your mat, and walk” on the path….
