 Favorite. Today’s reading we hear how Israel (Jacob) loved Joseph more than any of his sons. “Israel loved Joseph best of all his sons.” We know favorites or singling out anyone does not go well. My 4th hour class asked me if they were my favorites. They are small group of freshman that bring energy and are respectful. It would be easy for me to say yes, however I told them I don’t have favorites. Truth be told I try to see the possibility in each student. I try to treat and respond to each student as if they are my favorite. Some students though make it easier than others. This Friday is a Friday before spring break. I realize they won’t be focused and I can’t blame them. Today, though I have to remember that each are created in Gods image and each are due the respect and teaching time I can give them. Yes, I’m ready for spring break, but to be included amongst one of God’s favorites I must take time for prayer and do my best at the job He has blessed me with on the path...

Comfort

During this time of the year, when I was little my mom would warn us that Santa’s elves were watching us through the window. Mrs. Claus was baking cookies when the sunset was brilliant. All those unimportant things mothers do for us. Mothers did not receive a manual for raising a child. They weren’t given on/ off switches. Mothers were given as a gift compassion, love, and a giving heart. I think God is a lot like a good mother. God gives comfort and is there for us. This time of year I think of Mary, a very young girl, having a baby out of wedlock. She gave birth in a manger, and watched her son die on a cross. Healthy Self

  Isaiah 38:16 “Lord, by such things people live; and my spirit finds life in them too. You restored me to health and let me live.” Our path is a winding trail. There are times we don’t realize that we need healing but then life happens and healing takes place through the grace of God. This past weekend my husband, daughter and I took a day trip to Galena. We had fun tasting wines, eating Gluten free pasta and finding excellent cheese. Mostly though, it was a time to reconnect, and reenergize, that is to heal. God created each of us with a piece of Gods created image in us. Only we can reflect that. God’s big plan for us is to be ourselves so others can know God. That requires a healthy self. Today do a self check in, what needs healing, physically, mentally, emotionally, intellectually and relationally? Take time to heal so you can be the created image of God you were meant to be on the path…

Stick Closer than a Brother

  “ One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Proverbs 18:24 Relationships can be tricky. My students are finishing their Old Testament course with the books of Wisdom. The quote from Proverbs reminds me of high school and how important friendships built there are. People seem to come and go in our lives. Relatives are there, but sometimes we seem closer to friends than family members. Advent is a great time to reach out and remind family and close friends how important they are. Relationships require time and communication. Send a Christmas card, make a phone call, but make sure you reach out and “stick closer than a brother” on the path…
