Deborah

Today, I have been thinking about Deborah from scripture. We find Deborah in the book of Judges. She was prophet, wife and judge. If you don’t know much about her, read Judges 4 & 5. I find it helpful to know that even in scripture there is a woman who held different roles. Growing up the expectations for me was to keep house and have children. My path, however, lead me down different paths. I did have the joy of staying at home and raising my children. This will always be my favorite time in my life. I find that Deborah provides me with a role model. She tells me that one is called not because of gender, but because of God. Have you ever, really, wanted to get away? Today we find that Jesus, after the death of his cousin/friend John the baptizer goes to the desert. He seeks time alone to process. Yet, people hear about his were abouts and find him. Instead of being angry, he feeds them! Jesus is moved with pity for them. What about Jesus...he keeps on giving. Many times I have found myself in the situation when I feel like all I do is give. I want to go into the desert, to reboot myself, yet someone needs something. My humaness sometimes does not allow me to be as gracious as Jesus is.  I think first, Jesus shows us that it is ok to want to retreat in times of crisis or sorrow. There are times when we need to reboot or regroup.
